However, the combat mechanics have limitations, affecting the player’s ability to apply abilities and control characters smoothly. Despite these flaws, Battle for Z is a bold instalment in the Dragon Ball Z series, with potential for improvement in gameplay mechanics for a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

As a Dragon Ball Z fan from the ‘90s, I love the fast action, destructible environments, and colourful beams of light that can blow up planets. Battle of Z has all that and more, but even a Solar Flare to the face couldn’t blind me to its simplistic fighting and useless AI teammates. Despite its gorgeous environments and brilliantly modelled cel-shaded characters, Battle of Z falls short of being a true Super Saiyan experience.

The combat in Battle of Z, while initially challenging to master, is quite basic. Each of the over 70 playable characters can use melee and ranged attacks and unleash a powerful blast after charging up, which makes up the majority of the combat. This simplicity can make the fighting feel shallow and repetitive, especially for a game centred around world-destroying battles. The lack of combo attacks or the ability to counter an opponent’s moves is a missed opportunity for deeper gameplay.

After completing missions, players are awarded cards that can be attached to characters to boost their stats. While this mechanic initially seems interesting, it becomes tedious as there are no penalties for switching cards between characters, making it a no-brainer to stack cards on oneself and teammates. Even with the option to auto-assign cards, managing them for each fighter and mission can be cumbersome.

A highlight of Battle of Z is the unique moves each character possesses based on their class. Experimenting with different characters to find ones that suit your style is rewarding. For example, Goku has powerful melee attacks, while Gotenks excels in Ki blasts. However, relying on AI teammates, especially for support actions like healing, can be frustrating as they often ignore critical needs, leading to avoidable defeats.

The game offers offline single-player missions that last roughly 12 hours. However, the incompetence of AI allies can lead to frequent failures, pushing players towards online co-op mode. Coordinating attacks with real partners can be immensely satisfying, but lag and matchmaking issues detract from the experience. Additionally, the limited game modes and unbalanced matchmaking in competitive multiplayer make matches often one-sided and frustrating.

Overall, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z Apk delivers on its spectacle but falls short in depth and balance, particularly in its combat and multiplayer modes. While it offers some enjoyment for fans of the series, its flaws prevent it from achieving greatness.
